Scooping Goat Poop

Last week at the CSA, I finally got to meet the cajeta lady. Debbie started selling goats' milk cajeta, a caramel sauce, there a couple of months ago. It flies off the shelf; with the summer heat, people love the excuse to buy ice cream to put it on. Knowing she had goats, and therefore goat poop, I asked if she'd let us get some poop for our garden. An enthusiastic "YES!" was the answer. Apparently she has a lot of poop...

On Sunday afternoon, we headed out to Jacobs Pride. These are not just your casual everyday goats. Debbie's goats have ranked in the Top Ten in national shows. We were off to get premium poop!

Is this where you park for poop collection, too?

Debbie was busy making a new batch of cajeta so she quickly showed us to the goat yards and stables. We were free to take as much of the droppings as we wanted, and there was plenty of it. We had six large garbage bags, the heavy duty yard bags, leftover from a craigslist pick-up ages ago (pine needles & oak leaves for mulch and compost). While some of the poop we scooped was damp, which made it heavy, in some ways that was better than the dry stuff. My sweetie got poopy dust all over him! (And decided we should cancel plans to stop by the grocery store on the way home.)

When we finished the work, we spent some time with the goats. The does were very friendly and begging for attention.

This gal was really insistent on getting lots of attention. I had to get my sweetie to come distract her so I could get close-ups. I think she liked him...

Aren't those horizontal pupils wild?

I'm sorry that I didn't get a picture of Bernie Mac. He was off on his own and kept us entertained with his attempts to lure us over to the fence so he could pee on us. I wanted to get a picture of him up on the fence so you could see what a stud he is, but I was afraid I might get shut down for goat porn. I mean, really. Click on the link above and check this guy out!

Before we left, I went to thank Debbie. Her cajeta smelled divine and made me regret my health problems with dairy. She was kind enough to share a friend's goat milk soap with me. The soap smells lovely, lathers up great, yet is a gentle cleanser. I wasn't sure if she did any canning other than the cajeta, so I brought her a jar of watermelon rind pickles.

I'm sure our garden will be happy to get composted goat manure next season. We could have just purchased some composted steer manure at the garden store but I'd rather connect with other folks in the community. We needed manure and she needed to get rid of it. Sounds like a good match to me!

That's awesome! Mmm, cajeta ... We too got some free manure (from a horse farm) last year. They had a ginormous pile of it. It was so beautifully composted -- all for the price of putting it in bins ourselves.

Haha! You should have gone to the store anyway! Everyone would have cleared out and you could have shopped in record time!

Hey, goat poop, great idea. We have a dairy goat farm near us. Think we'll plan a trip over.
Fabulous close up shot of your sweetie's new wanna be sweetie!!

Those horizontal pupils ARE wild. Wow!

Are Nubians the cutest? I miss goats, I used to show them for 4-H when I was a kid. I used to show Toggenburgs, which I think are the sweetest dairy goats you can find. Very handsome as well.

I can see it now. Chile's checking her stats and can't believe people are finding Chile Chews by Googling "goat porn"

Hhahahahhahahahah

Good luck with your compost.

What a crappy post! LOL I never knew that goats had pupils like that! I want pupils like that! Scare of the trick or treaters!

My favorite part (aside from the goat pupils!) is that you took her watermelon rind pickles. How cool is that! You get the good neighbor of the week award.

I have a Saanen nanny & 2 Toggenburg x puc kids, so plenty of goat poop everywhere. The magnificent alpha puc is no more (read my last entry for the gory details), but I understand your comment on goat porn & well-endowed males. The actual mating is very fast. My 3 goats are now frightened of me.

Like some horse poop? I only have mares, though, so no horsey porn here!

I really love goats. I think you got some great shots even if none of them demonstrated studliness.

Horse manure is occasionally listed on craigslist, but I always worry that it will contain chemicals to keep down fly problems. Haven't figured out a tactful way to ask the owners without offending them. Yeah, I guess I should just be direct, huh?

Joyce, I'll have to remember that tactic around the holidays. LOL!

Susan, she'd be even pushier than me, so I think he'll pass. ;-)

Allie - evil or wild. You be the judge. Perhaps an idea for a Halloween costume...

Krista, they are cute. I think I'd have to say the littler varieties are cuter, though.

Katie, not that I've had much time to even glance at my stats lately, but I haven't noticed "goat porn" yet.

Oh, Rob, you know I'm full o' crap. Even after a whole month of "Cut the Crap", I'm still full of it. But, what's really funny is that you read what I write anyway. ;-)

Kale, it's just good neighborly sharing. She was a bit surprised because I was, in a way, doing her a favor by taking away some of the poop. I want to see if there's a way to arrange a carpooling poop-collection trip within the CSA membership.

Killi, I don't think it would be worth the cost for me to get horse poop from your mares. LOL! Are your does settling down yet?

Angelina, thanks. I'm surprised that our little not-so-fancy digital camera does a decent job. These cutie pies were really photogenic, too.

Persi, Romulus & Remus are still frightened of me, which actually makes feeding the poultry & cats far easier ~ I don't have goats trying to get in the feed bins! Only Persi is female (nanny or just goat here), the others are 2 puc/billy kids. I need more nanies & those Nubians look gorgeous
