Spending Freeze

Yesterday afternoon I finally got around to totalling up last year's expenses and income. We've been careful lately about spending money. The economy's getting tighter, we're searching for a new home, and my sweetie's workplace may be considering salary cuts. With our recent frugality in mind, it was a bit of a shock to see how much money we spent last year.

As I showed my sweetie the spreadsheet, I expressed frustration that we had spent more money than I realized. He calmly reminded me that it had been intentional. When the dollar was looking so grim last year, we decided to stock up on a few things and buy some equipment that we wanted. Our thinking was that these goods would hold their value better than the dollar.

Oh yeah. Now I remember.

In the kitchen and pantry, we looked at ways to increase our food security. I bought some vodka and made tasty liqueurs. I took advantage of a sale on dehydrated food for our emergency supplies. I bought enough coffee substitutes to last me until 2012, just so that I could do a thorough comparison of them for the blog. I picked up more canning jars and lids, and got a pressure canner. I got the Tulsi solar oven, which I enjoyed cooking with through the summer and fall.

Our transportation expenses increased, partly unexpectedly. My sweetie built the frame for my new Xtracycle but we still had to pay for the Xtracycle kit itself. We drove out of town more often to support my mother-in-law through her mother's final days and death, and then to prepare the house for sale.

Our medical expenses were pretty high for good and bad reasons. My sweetie and I both took classes on First Aid, and then put together First Aid kits for home and vehicle. I started treatment for TMJ, including a fairly expensive custom mouth guard to wear at night. Angel needed a small malignant growth removed.

Turns out it was a year with unusual expenses, most of which will hopefully not be necessary again. Now it's time for a Spending Freeze!

Because we are now looking at moving out of the immediate area, we have essentially stopped shopping. I'm trying to use up all of the food in the freezer as well as the various condiments and preserved vegetables in the refrigerator. We get fresh produce weekly at the CSA, along with occasional dried beans and grains. Cleaning myself and the house is done with simple supplies such as baking soda and vinegar, so there's no need to buy cleaning supplies or toiletries. I'm working hard to get rid of stuff now rather than buy anything new.

However, there is one problem with this plan...

This is my 500th Blog Post!

Don't you think that deserves something a little special? Surely I can go shopping to celebrate. Well, actually I can and I can do it without breaking the spending freeze. You see, Rob was nice enough to hold a drawing for a $25 Sears gift card and guess who won. I'm off to Sears today to look for an electric blanket. We've decided that preheating the bed, and then turning the blanket off, will allow us to turn the thermostat down further at night. It should reduce our total energy use. Thanks, Rob!

Congrats on 500 posts! Although I don't know if I'd go with the heated blanket. I'm thinking more on the lines of cake...

If I had will power I'd have an electric blanket. Hard enough to get out of bed when it's just husband my human furnance besides me. Counldn't imagine every square inch being toasty warm. Bet your one of those peeps who never use the snooze alarm huh?
BTW Congrads on the Robuck score!
See if you can snag an online coupon.

Somehow an electric blanket seems incongruous with your attempts to provide manual alternatives for everything; just sayin'. My folks (Mr. and Mrs. Frugal) used them. They didn't work for me because I like to get frisky with my covers, putting them under me, over me, and sometimes even between parts of me.

What did you decide on the move?

Enjoy the electric blanket. We waited and waited to get one because we thought it wasn't "green." Whatever. We got one a few months back and now reduced the heat.

happy 500th!

Joyce, I think it just proves that I am a bigmouth. ;-)

Heather, thanks. The cake is in the oven. Beet chocolate cake using SusanV's Fatfree Vegan Kitchen recipe. I'll be frosting it with lemon frosting.

Pelenaka, the only hard part will be getting out of bed in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. We set the programmable thermostat to come on half an hour before we have to get up (without snooze alarm) in the morning.

Oldnovice, like I said, it should reduce overall energy use. That's a good thing, no? We've been closing the bedroom off during the day already but heating it half an hour before bed with an electric heater. That doesn't solve the problem of cold sheets. With this, we can eliminate the heater and attack the problem directly.

Green Bean, thanks for the feedback. We're looking forward to it.

I go back and forth on this one. There are things we want/need that will make life easier in the future. I sometimes think we should spend the money while we have it and then sometimes I think we should hold onto every cent we have with the economy being so bad. I've been trying to find a job and haven't had any luck, which is unheard of! I'm a college science teacher that is willing to teach community college at night. People should be busting down my door but no one has any openings. The ecomony is definitely bad!

Chile - look into a heated mattress pad. I have one and LOVE IT!! They use way, way less energy than a heated blanket (according to Build It Solar's Half Project). They might be more expensive though.

Congrats on your blog! You are superfragalistic!

Rob - thanks again!

Christy - I hear you. My thoughts bounce around like that, too. One minute I think we're doing the right thing, the next I'm convinced it's the biggest mistake we've made. LOL

Hausfrau - I'd prefer that but we sleep on an aerobed and are concerned about heat causing premature wear to the vinyl. Any thoughts on that? Thanks for your nice words!

Congratulations on your 500th post.

Your cake selection sounds awesome.. I must try that one when the beets come in.

Congratulations on the blog landmark! Our house is so chilly that we were using electric space heaters in the bedrooms, but switched to electric blankets last year. LOVE them. Much cheaper to use too.

We dumped electric blankets for hot water bottles. That way I can get my feet warm without baking that furnace of a hubby. Its even cheaper too. Only half a kettle of nearly boiling water isn't much and I sometimes rewarm it if things get particularly cold.

Okay, I didn't make it to Sears today and we've been talking here. My sweetie doesn't really need the electric blanket. I'm the one that's chilled when I get in bed. So... tonight I'm going to put my little heating pad on my side for 20 minutes before bed and see if that does that trick. If it's sufficient, it uses less energy and keeps me from "buying" something else.

We don't have a hot water bottle, but somewhere I have a rice-filled bag that Crunchy made me a couple of years ago. I can heat that up, too, and stick it down by my tootsies.

Thanks, Viv, for making me think about an alternative.

PS: any suggestions for what to get with my Sears gift card now?!

Congrats Chile! I look forward to more rants and musings.

Doesn't Heather also get chillier than her husband? I do too, but my husband is a living hot water bottle so I'm always stealing his body heat. He often complains that I only like him for his heating ability :) which is partially true.

Heather @ SGF said...

Yep. I'm the cold one. I use the heating pad on my side and it works great. We have a heated blanket on the whole bed, but I can't turn it up high enough to keep me warm since he ends up overheated. So the heating pad on my side does just the trick. Our bedroom has been in the mid 50's so it's MUCH needed.

He's crazy with the AC in the summer too, so I use the heating pad year round :)

Mid 50s, Heather? That's warm! ;-)

I've got the thermostat set at 48 at night currently and the bedroom is usually several degrees colder than the rest of the house. I try to steal covers to stay warm but my sweetie has learned to hang on tight. hehe

500? Congratulations! I've been thinking about an electric blanket, too for preheating the bed!

Good luck with the spending freeze. Are you tracking your expenses on a computer program? I found that when we started doing that, we learned so much about where it was going and stopped spending hardly anything. I use a FREE program, called Buddi. It's open source, and you can donate to the development, but it's free to use and download.

Jennifer, yes I track on the computer. Actually, I taught myself Excel by developing my spreadsheets. I'll go look at the other one though for ideas!
