Local Food Miles

We just had a wonderful dinner with produce from yesterday's CSA share: new Yukon gold potatoes, I'itoi onions, spring mix and cilantro. Last night, I boiled the potatoes in salted water until tender. I threw together a salad with the lettuce, onions, and cilantro. When we got checked into the hotel, I took our potatoes and Corelle plates to the lobby to use the only microwave. (I think the guy at the counter thought I was a bit strange.) We simply dumped the salad on top of the hot potatoes and seasoned with salt and pepper. Arizona sweet oranges were dessert.

Does my local food still count as local if we drove it 450 miles before eating it?

My vote is yes. The food I carry with me while traveling always tastes better than it even does at home. And it's comforting or grounding or something. Have a good trip.

:) Well, it sure beats the alternative! I love "real" food on trips. I spend a LOT of time in a hotel room for work each month, and I've learned that the full cooler of food and the small continental breakfast microwave at the front desk are what keeps me from going crazy!

I definitely vote yes to that. I like to take some home stuff with us too if we go away (about once every 3 years if we're lucky).

Good on ya! So much better than just about any restaurant you would have stopped at.

I didn't mention it earlier but these potatoes were incredible. I love Yukon golds and these were the first we've gotten in ages at the CSA. The red LaSodas we get more frequently are also good but nothing compares to the buttery rich taste of a Yukon gold. (Dang, shouldn't I get a commission or something for this glowing report?!)

Acch!, I don't expect to see Yukons for another three months! Enjoy! With anything!

Yukon golds are delicious!

And I vote yes on the local foods issue. who knows if the food you'd eaten in a restaurant along with way would be local or not??

safe trip,
