August Reminders

If you want to encourage yourself to drive less and bike, walk, or ride mass transit more, sign up for the challenge beginning tomorrow. For more information, click on the green "Park Your Car!" logo in the sidebar.

If you want to stop heating up your house during the hot summer months and start cooking with the sun, you have 11 days left to get a 10% discount on a solar oven. To order from the nice folks up north, click on the "Solar Cooking Log" page tab at the top of the page. (Update on August 12, 2009: The coupon has now expired.) The sidebar is also where you can check to see what I'm cooking in my solar ovens. I update the solar cooking log every time I use the ovens.

If you want to give homemade preserved food or handmade gifts for the holidays, you have five months left. It seems like a long time, but it will slip through your fingers faster than prickly pear juice drips through the sieve. Get to work!

If you have any questions for me or requests for posts on particular topics, leave a comment here. Depending on my mood, I'll ignore you completely or jump on it right away.

In the meantime, I need to go mash my prickly pear fruit in the solar oven to get more juice from them. Jelly-making is on tomorrow's schedule!

Ignore me??? I will not be ignored!!!

Even thought I think a solar oven would have done wonders around here this month I am going to have to take a pass on buying one. LOL We had the hottest day on record for this area a little 103, And the local blog requestes pics on gal sent in a pice of her baking cookies in her parked car- So it is at least doable!

Ignore your readers? I thought I was the only one who got that moody.

Katecontinued has a solar cooker and cooked us a meal with it that was quite delicious. I had no idea that these cookers were so small. See it in a picture on the internet made me think that it was much larger.

I still am not sure if I will get a solar cooker though..only cause the only place we can put it would be on a pathway and I don't want our neighbors tripping over our food.

I've been thinking about it for several months and with your discount I got myself a Global oven to go with my Tulsi oven.

I will have a report on how I do with it in the next few days. but I'm pretty sure from looking at it that it's easy to use and I will be able to cook the more traditional mid-Western, farm like, WASPy cooking that I learned from my Mom!

With the Tulsi and after reading food/cooking/prep blogs I have tried more new foods to me and ways of cooking them in the past 18 months than I have in my whole previous life!

Couscous, quinoa, beans, lentils,
various nonyeast breads, some egg dishes and all kinds of vegetable I never ate--or knew I ate! that would be chards, kales, collard greens and winter squashes.

I've liked most of them
but mostly beans and butternut squash aren't going to be my favorites. However, split peas and lentils with veggies and/or rice are just fine.

Anyway, I'd thought I'd let you know the discount from you went to a good use!

peace to All,
shamba

Sooo, I gotta tell you, we've finally bit the bullet and we're getting a bike trailer to haul our little one! It's big enough to also carry groceries plus one more kid. The best part is the price, $150 (this brand usually goes for $500-$1000). Yay! We're going to get to park our car!

Rob - well, I managed for 5 days, but no, I just can't ignore you any longer. LOL! That pic of the cookies baking in a care was awesome. Thanks for that.

Beany - hehe, yeah, I get moody. Actually, it's more likely that I get really busy and can't get to the blog. The solar ovens are kind of small inside but still big enough to cook quite a lot of food. I could easily cook a meal to feed, oh, probably 8 people between the two of mine.

I can understand you don't want to trip over the cooker. Do you easy access to your rooftop?

Shamba - I'm so glad you got an oven! And that's great that it's expanding your diet and recipe repertoire. Healthy and cheap cookin'!

Krista - way to go. I'll add you to the list. I'll add a blog to if you'll leave the address here.

Chile: Unfortunately we have no roof access. It is a small apartment complex and we're on the ground floor of a two story structure. And the way the building is constructed it is like this:

______

BIG
Loquat
Tree
