I am SO tired of cleaning someone else's house. Boy oh boy, had I let the rental house cleaning go during the last few months of chaos. It got to the point that we just gave up and figured it would be best to do a massive cleaning after all our junk was out of the house. That may have been the case, but wow. Just wow.
I have spent the last FOUR AND A HALF days at the rental house:
Cleaning up the yard - weeding, raking, mulching, piling blocks in one location, minor pruning, gathering all our garden and yard equipment, hauling old pallets out to the curb (where no-one has picked them up so I'll have to load them up to go to the dump), taking down the shadecloth/bird netting contraption set up for the container garden, moving the big pile of burnable pruned branches to clean up underneath it, sweeping the patio, and on and on.
Hubby sorted the garage stuff into trash, ours, and owners. I dealt with the trash and sweeping up, cleaned the windows (carefully as several have been cracked since we moved in), and changed the lock.
Cleaning the house has taken the most time because I do a thorough job. I am so good that I have only lost part of a security deposit for a rental once, in my entire history of renting, and that was due to corruption on the part of the rental agency. (We didn't use the carpet cleaning service they recommended. I chose one that was listed with Better Business Bureau; he did a great job and guaranteed his work. The jerks kept $176 for "carpet cleaning" anyway.)
So, back in the rental house, I have spent HOURS getting it spiffed up: spackling holes in the wall (including ones that were there when we moved in), dusting the walls and window sills and window blinds, dusting off the ceiling fans and closet shelves, cleaning the wall smudges, cleaning all the inside windows and hosing down the outsides, cleaning mirrors and switchplates and doorknobs, thoroughly vacuuming - yes with the edge tool too, cleaning baseboards, scrubbing toilets and sinks and tub/showers, sweeping and mopping floors - on my hands and knees, scrubbing kitchen counters (a total pain because of the wide rough grout lines between the tiles), cleaning every inch of the refrigerator finally getting off some of the sticky residue that was there when we moved in, doing the oven cleaning thing, scrubbing the stovetop (60 years old and a pain to get clean), cleaning the kitchen cabinets inside and out, polishing the kitchen sink and faucet, and more.
Today I got to the point of really resenting all the cleaning I was doing. The house is 10 times cleaner now than when we moved in. It was like a bad April Fool's joke; we signed the lease on April 1. The refrigerator was gross and had to be scrubbed before we could put food in it. The tan kitchen tiles had weird white splotches like someone had dropped bleach on them; it turned out the tiles were actually white and the splotches were where hot water had dropped on it. Took lots of scrubbing to get them clean. The owner had left clutter I had to beg her to come take away so we could use the garage we were paying rent for.
I am finally done down there. Tomorrow the carpets are professionally cleaned and then I'm turning in the keys. It's time to focus on my house and my future, not someone else's money-
making house!
Do I sound tired? Bitter? Frustrated and a little angry?
Yeah, well I am. Get over it or come help me. There's a ton of work left to do at the new place!

Sorry. Been there; done that. What's really bad is when you foolishly think you want to move back in because it looks so great! I know it's hard work but it'll all soon be over. I really would come out to help but I'm busy doing my, uh, well, the uh, I know what it is, just can't bring it forward, right now... but, it's important. Otherwise, I'd be there...
Oh, this sounds like when we bought our house. The owners were childhood friends of my husband, and I guess they thought we would be okay with the filth. EVERYTHING needed scrubbing, mouse poo everywhere, and they left a lot of old, crappy, furniture for us to throw out. Glad you're finished and I don't blame you for being a little bitter. At least you have your own home now to go and work on!
If I get out to your corner of the world, I would be very happy to help with your home improvements! However, from my current location (NC), I can just cheer you on and enjoy reading about the adventure. Have a wonderful day, Miss Chile!
Love to drop by but there is a little too much distance involved for a quick help out :)

We once bought a small house from an elderly alcoholic woman that was a nightmare to clean. That one took 3 1/2 days to get clean but the cleaning was for US to live there rather than for us to move out. Felt different...
I really don't understand why you folks are not willing to drop everything and travel halfway across the country (or world) to come help me. Harrumph.
Okay ... so, I'll hop a plan to Arizona this evening and come down to help you, but when we're finished, you have to come back to Maine and help me clean my house. Keep in mind there are eight people living here, most of whom you'll have to clean around, because they're too lazy to get up and help out. Plus, there are two dogs, three pullets, a rabbit and a stinky guinea pig.
And it hasn't been deeply cleaned in a very long time ;).
Of course, I think I'm probably getting the better end of the deal ;).
LOL you know I would be there in a second to help you out.
That damn job thang.
Well, you're entitled to you irritation at that house! Remember last summer--I'm sure you do--with no fans and no cooling of any kind!
(I don't know if the house and your lease came with any cooling thought.)
Think of all the good karma you're generating by leaving that place in better shape than you found it. And THAT you take with you ...
BTW, what can I do with potatoes that are going a little green on the inside just under the skin???
I know someone who reads this or you know what to do about them.
peace to all,
shamba
Cut away the worst of the green and use as normal. Means you need to look at the amount of light getting to your spuds as that is what turns them green.
Try moving into a house vacated by an elderly woman with five cats and a badly incontinent elderly dog! We ended up having to remove all the carpets and part of the floor too where it had gone rotten. There was one room where the carpet was a moving wall of moth maggots! It came out in pieces dribbling larvae. I've never seen anything quite like that before and I hope I never do again!
We did get professional carpet cleaners in for the better looking pieces of carpet but after three days the smell was back as badly as ever so they went too.
We dug up the whole concrete floor in the kitchen and one other room and laid proper pads, replaced an outer wall that was so rotten it was held up only by the roof (you could move it round a bit like a curtain) and generally painted. replaced, recovered etc everything in sight.
We ended up with a pretty nice vintage cottage but it took the better part of two years just to get it liveable. We added two babies into this disaster zone along with two kittens and a few chooks. In fact, eldest was a prem baby and the kitchen was a hole in the ground when he came home and most of the appliances were in the living room or the laundry.
Then we moved! And did it all again!!
At least the next house wasn't anything like as bad and neither is the house we have now. (and it isn't finished yet but does have a first rate bench and sink unit now).

You keep cleaning, I'll help your sweetie get the veggie garden going. That's more fun than cleaning! :)
With greening potatoes, I often put them on a windowsill until they sprout, and then plant them. :)
That's really nasty-sounding, Viv! We bought a house that was in bad shape but not that bad. However, the old lady left a full filthy refrigerator with chicken in the freezer expired a year prior. On the day she left, she threw out pork bones for the loose cats that she fed. Ugh. We emptied out the fridge and donated it to a halfway house for them to clean and resell.
We had to pull up carpet in that house, too, but I don't remember it being infested. Just old and falling apart.
THANK you for the greenpotato advice.
