It's a Dog's Life

Angel is completely obsessed with round-tailed ground squirrels.

They taunt her by digging holes in her yard and popping up while she's stuck inside.

When she is allowed outside, she has to check out each and every single hole in the yard. She likes to stick her snout down in the holes and snort.

When I call her to come back in the house, she ignores me, preferring instead to lounge by a hole.

What she's really hoping for, I think, is one of the squirrels to pop its head up while she's laying there.

These little guys are too smart for her. It's very hard to get a decent picture with my little camera. This one didn't move for five minutes while I stood motionless hoping to get a better picture.

All day long, the ground squirrels run around in the yard, across the road, and in the neighbors' yards. They play, chase each other, climb up the mesquite trees to get the beans, and hang out....until the camera comes out and then all you see is the tips of their tails as they bolt down their holes.

Maybe I'm going to have to lie on my belly right in front of a hole in order to get a good picture...

If she got one, I don't think I'd be able to get it away from her!

Hubby had the scary task of prying Polie's jaws apart a couple of weeks ago to remove a roadkill Colorado River Toad (poisonous when alive) and really wasn't sure whether he'd get out of it without injury!

We don't have much in the way of small critters round here. Lots of wonderful birds though.

Trying to get things off the cats is impossible so I gave that away years back. Fortunately they mostly go for rats and mice. I just make sure they eat them outside!

Well, I've done things like lay on my belly to get photos of cats doing things. Then they decide that they want to come nose to nose with the camera lens and see what I'm doing. :)

Sharlene - well, if it would reduce the cost of feeding the dogs...

Viv - we were just commenting on the amazing number of bunnies outside right now. Obviously the coyotes are not up to the job of population control. The dogs would like to take up the slack!

Shamba - I've had issues with other dogs paying too much attention to the camera to get a "candid" shot. Angel totally ignores me so she's easy. She does not like - really does not like - when I try to shoo her away from one of the squirrel holes.
