And This Bed was Just Right...

Call me weird, but I sleep on an air mattress rather than a "real bed." I've found it's more comfortable and it's a heck of a lot cheaper. With all of our moves, it's also far easier to move than box springs and a mattress.

Over the past month, there have been signs that Angel (dog) has been getting on the bed when we are gone. Signs like my sweetie's pillow tossed onto the floor and dog fur on the bed. The bed is currently on the floor as we haven't had the time to set up our wood platform for it. Evidently Angel was not happy with the amount of air in the bed this week.

I came home from an errand and when I entered the house, I immediately heard a high-pitched whine. Hm, not generally a good sound to hear. The noise led me to the bedroom where the built-in air pump for the mattress was running. Angel must have stepped on the control and turned on the pump for a firmer bed. It had been running for a while judging from the extremely full air mattress straining at the seams and from how hot the air pump had gotten.

I let out some air and the bed was still rock hard. Quite a lot of air had to be released before the bed was just right for us. It puzzles me that Angel would want it so firm since she is a sucker for blankets and pillows tossed on the floor, and loves her cushy custom made bench cover.

We now leave the air pump unplugged. And cover the bed with an old blanket.

Rotten dog....

Sure blame the dog! Poor Angel just wants a comfy bed.

Perhaps there was an intruder. Caucasin - 5' 110 lbs. long blond hair, sweet smile, yawns excessively. Sleeps arounds.

He choose an alternative to the usual attack dog method employed by so many.

We have a cat like that except he prefers his bed to be inhabited :)
Come to think of it, so does the other cat!

You do understand that you're allowed to live in the house at the discretion of your dog, don't you... that's just the way it is... my Angel insists on sleeping with me, too... come visit when you can...

Comfrey oil and salve. Have you tried that for mosquito bites?

So whose side are you all on anyway?!

nova - I've got some comfrey salve somewhere (it does have comfrey in it, doesn't it, nomikins?)....plus several new mosquito bites. I'll give it a try.

Uh, Chile, I thought that was obvious... Angel's, of course... sweet dreams...

as a fellow freak who prefers an air mattress to a "real" mattress, which air mattress do you prefer? I've been using Coleman and they last 9 - 18 mo, and they're cheap, but I'd be interested to know which one you have with a pump that will get it that firm. The Coleman pump gets it say 90% full, and I have to huff and puff to get it to my desired firmness.

Cheers

btw: this random stranger on the internet found you via American Apocalypse site, which I found a couple weeks ago and have been devouring since.

Howdy Xathras,

We started out with Coleman, too, and found they didn't last. We now buy Aerobed brand. They seem to be well made and last for several years at least.

The best model was a split Queen with dual controls so each person could have the firmness they wanted - kinda like a poorman's Sleep Number bed. Unfortunately, that one's been discontinued.

One thing to watch out for on any air mattress on the floor is mold. Due to humidity from body sweat and respiration, they can get moldy. It happens slower in our dry desert climate but still happens. Possible solutions are to NOT make the bed up first thing in the morning - let it air out. I'm also thinking the next time we get around to building a raised plywood platform for it, we should drill ventilation holes all over the platform.

Hope this helps!
