In an effort to reduce the amount of stuff we'll have to move and to open up the possibilities for living in a smaller place, I'm going through our belongings (again). Before making the final decision to toss in the towel here, we'd already decided to let go of two lovely lamps from our past. They were big and bulky, required large rooms to look good, and were a pain to pack and move. I'm happy to report they have moved on to new digs.
I'm working hard to pare down my overstuffed kitchen. Several appliances are gone already and there's a small box of additional items in the corner waiting for new homes. I suspect we'll end up having an enormous moving sale in a few months and kitchen items are often a good draw.
Yesterday, two folks took advantage of bulky outside items listed on craigslist. It was helpful to have them gone but they didn't really count towards reducing what we have to move since I scavenged them off craigslist only weeks ago myself. My yard was simply a way station for them. There was a positive side benefit, however, to this situation. One of the people who came by is interested in many of the same prepping-type activities that we are: gardening, forming community with neighbors, water harvesting, composting, chickens, canning, and so on. She didn't know anyone else with all of these same interests and we were each happy to find someone of like mind.
Today, after visiting with my mother-in-law in the hospital for a while, I went by the used bookstore and traded a dozen books and a dozen DVDs for store credit. My powers of resistance must have been working overtime as I only came home with one "new" book (another Vonnegut for hubby) and a DVD (The Dark Crystal) this visit.
We've been talking about going through the shed soon, too. Most of the appliance parts that I salvaged from the dishwasher and refrigerators are probably going to be freebies on craigslist; whatever doesn't go can be recycled. Salvaged plant pots are easily replaceable from any landscaping job so we'll let those go. Some lucky gardener is going to get lots of clean, tape-free cardboard for sheet mulching, and I'm still debating about the disposition of the compost. It's heavy to move, and if we don't move into a situation where gardening is an immediate option, it probably isn't worth the effort to move it and store it.
This is a problem I've run into before. We have left compost behind a number of times, usually giving it to neighbors who are thrilled to have had someone else do all the work of making good soil for them. This time, I'm probably going to also get rid of the round composting bin. Perhaps my friend in town would like it as she keeps putting off starting her own compost pile. She's also going to be the beneficiary of my newest solar oven. She's been wanting one for a long time and I really don't need three!
It's too bad most of you readers don't live in this area because you could clean up on prepping supplies. I'll be thinning out my supply of canning jars and lids, cheesecloth (got a whole case available!), and possibly even some food. We haven't decided yet on our water tanks, but tools are likely to be pared down to the bare essentials. There's gonna be one helluva sale here.

My thoughts exactly...too bad I don't live near Chile! But you are doing some good by passing on your things to others who will use them, and not sending more "stuff" to a landfill.
Part of me envies that you are de-cluttering, the other part of me shudders since I will have to do it sooner or later.
I have a real hard time downsizing, and every time I read about someone else doing it, I start a mental inventory of my house, thinking about what I can give away or sell or trade ... but that's about as far as I usually get ;).
Would love that cheesecloth... I'm downsizing, myself, and have gotten rid of lots of kitchen duplicates, this week... it's amazing how we seem to turn our backs and they durn things multiply in the drawers!... at least, at bare bones, you'll know exactly what needs to be added... come visit when you can...
When you have a sale, I'd be happy to come down and see what I could use and give some money for them.
I don't have anything in particular that I'm looking for right now but you never know!
I read your post about your MIL this morning but my computer, or the net, ate my post! I was very glad to hear about her.
peace, shamba
I'll be doing the same thing this month and next. TSHTF for me in August - job not gone but in limbo and not providing income. Car hanging on barely, no money means mortgage default. In a condo where 56% are not paying dues- water for whole complex to be turned off in a few months. Medical bills piling up,blah blah blah blah blah.
Going back to simplicity and paring back belongings to fit into a space 400 square feet or smaller.
Funny, when I was thinking about prepping for the future, the nomadic life didn't register as a possibility. Now its looking like it might be the most probable. Anyone want to unload Tiny house on wheels- what will you take in trade?
I feel for you and your hubby, Chile.
Farmgal - I hate, hate, hate waste so I will do everything I can to make sure minimal garbage is added to the landfill!
I have de-cluttered so many times that I really can't understand how I have anything left, much less stuff that I am more or less easily willing to get rid of. Obviously I like yard sales too much...
Wendy - I hear you! Although, I have to admit how nice it was when I could fit all my books on the bookshelves finally yesterday instead of having them spill out. Now to try to eliminate the little bookshelf altogether...
Sharlene - it would cost a bit to ship but if you seriously want the cheesecloth, we could probably work some kind of deal. :)
Shamba - will do. I'm going to get rid of as much as I can through craigslist ahead of time, though, so no promises on what will be left.
Young Snowbird - yikes! That's awful. I'm glad to hear you have a plan you're putting into action, even though I'm sure it's very painful.
Our thinking is that we need to stay in this area while MIL is here. When she's gone, we have the option to move. That means our best bet is to rent or buy something small and mobile that can move with us eventually....provided the cost of gas doesn't destroy that option by then!
Wow, I really feel for you with all you've been through lately. I'm so glad your MIL is doing well though, and hope she gets to a full recovery soon. My hubby & I lost 3 of our parents this past year, so I can totally relate your worries and desire to stick close by your MIL. Great she has such good neighbours though, this is a big help. The gift baskets sound lovely btw, so fabulous to get homemade stuff like you make!
Glad to hear you're still positive about the decluttering and the lamps in particular... yes, that one hit home... I've been hanging on to 2 large lamps myself and am now thinking about letting them go too... but I still wish I could go to your yard sale LOL! I think it would be great to be in a community of like-minded people and we could have a central storage for prepping supplies and tools, maybe a lending library of things like food dehydrators, cuisinarts, giant pots that don't fit in cupboards, etc. Oh I'm just dreaming now!!!
Elli :-)
glad you are decluttering with time to spare. I need to do something as we live in less than 400 sq. ft of space! My problem is books! I have them on the couch and also next to the bed in our rv! Cookbooks are hard to get rid of....
What kind of solar oven are you selling or donating?
I have been watching a new series called Hoarders on A&E today. Wow! I am not that bad!
I go into the Kitchen Collection now to just say hi to the manager and give her a hug and she knows I don't need a darn thing!!! I still like to visit with her....I got way too many kitchen things already!
Weird. I could have sworn I left a comment on this post the day it appeared. I'm losing my marbles! I'm so sorry you have to move after putting so much time and effort into this place. I can only trust that the garden gate is opening on something fantastically better. That is my hope for you, at least. Wonderful that you found a like-minded soul and possibly a wonderful new friend. Much luck to you, Chile.
Elli - MIL should be moving to in-patient PT today, and much closer to where we are, so driving will be reduced!
Love the idea of community central storage, but it takes the right people participating for that to work.
Nancy - sorting through the books is going to be very hard. Not looking forward to it!
Gave my friend the "Sunlight Cooker" this morning. I don't believe they are for sale anymore but it seems to have been well made.
Kathryn - didn't see one. Perhaps your lost marbles are keeping mine company...
We look back on a previous living situation we were sad to leave and are relieved we are no longer there. That gives us hope that, in time, we may be able to look back on this the same way.
Canning jars and lids - oh, I would SOOOOOO be there!
Why do you have to live on the other side of the world, Chile?
I seem to remember practically begging for you to come to New Zealand. But you wouldn't.
So I guess I'll just have to find my own supplies and put them together for what I hope will be an upcoming summer glut of fruit and tomatoes. I'd have loved to share them with you, too.
