False Alarm

I woke early and took the dogs out this morning around 5:45 am. It was barely sprinkling when we went out and a not-too-chilly 42 degrees thanks to overnight cloud cover. As is typical, the rain started coming down pretty hard while the dogs wandered around the yard. I called them in, dried everybody off, and went to make a hot drink for myself.

I checked the temperature again at 6:30 when I gathered their bowls for breakfast. It was still raining out - well, actually sleeting by now - and the temperature had dropped to 36 degrees. By the time I got the dog food in their bowls, the temperature read in the high twenties. I turned around for a few minutes and it plummeted to 16 degrees.

Holy Cow! Twenty degree drop in five minutes?!

Wait a minute. We never did figure out if the remote temperature sensor for outdoors was actually waterproof. I went to grab it from its home just outside the front door and noticed that it was still sleeting ... at a supposed 13 degrees.

Houston, we have a problem.

As soon as I walked inside with it, it registered 33 degrees. Yeah, right. I removed the batteries and dried everything off. Unfortunately, when I put them back in, I couldn't get a reading at all. There's probably something I have to do to link the sensor back up with the display inside but I have no idea what nor do I know where the directions are since they are not in the file where they belong.

This is why I don't like digital weather equipment. When we first got here, I looked all over town for a min/max thermometer like we used to have years ago. It was the old-fashioned "manual" kind not a digital thing. Nobody sells these in the stores anymore. Finding a rain gauge that wasn't plastic was also very difficult. I looked online and found a place to order the thermometer but, as has happened too many times lately, it slipped my mind and I never placed the order.

I guess I'm going to have to see if it's cold enough to snow the old-fashioned way ... when it actually starts snowing instead of sleeting. Sheesh. So low-tech!

Whew - for a moment there I thought you were experiencing a reverse chinook!

We're very low tech here. We have no outdoor thermometer and indoors, heating with wood means the temperature fluctuates from room to room and hour to hour - often quite dramatically.

So - if it feels cold, it's cold. If it feels hot, it's hot. That's how I figure it :)

Hubby got the temperature sensor to work. It's dropping outside and just transitioned from sleet to snow, which means it's going to be a wet soggy mess out there on top of the inch of rain that fell yesterday/last night.

I'm with Olivia. :) That's how I figure temperature too. :)

Considering I'm a Southern Belle (born in Fla, moved to Va), heat doesn't bother me much, and have lived in Canada a very long time, so cold doesn't bother me much; usually I'm pretty comfortable no matter what the weather - and drive other people crazy. :)

Err - *natural* heat & cold that is. I'm very UNcomfortable in air-conditioned buildings or over-heated (in my mind) homes. :(

It's 1:00 p.m. here MST, in Phoenix in my front yard and our temps are dropping from mid 40s the past hour I'll bet.

We had good rain from the storm but now the sky is mostly clear and it is cold out there. it's only 48 in Phoenix today! And there's a wind of about 15-20 miles and hour. It' supposed to be in the 40s tomorrow, too.

I haven't been this cold in years here at home! Of course, it was easily this cold when I lived in the Maryland-DC area.

we're not going to be much over 50 degrees for the next two days and very clear cold nights are starting tonight and lasting until Monday morning according to the tv station weather info I checked a little while ago. the freeze warning is for about 25 degrees even for the center of Phoenix.
That's VERY cold night temps for Phoenix. Definitely covering plants for the next 3 nights.

One station this morning was saying it could be cold enough tomorrow morning to maybe worry about rained streets turning to ice. I haven't seen snow flurries here in 20 years and we can get fog in the winter but I've never seen ice on our roads.

I haven't wrapped my head up in years but my ears hurt so after being in the wind today I had to put on something. I just had too much to do today to let it go another day.

chile, snuggle up with your DH and the dogs and keep warm for the next few days!

People who ccame to warm southern Arizona to see the bowl games here are in for a surprise. At least, they'll have some sunshine.

peace, Shamba

Weather update from Shamba's front yard:

Flurries, yep, snow flurries ... at 2:45-2:55 p.m. today.

I wondered what that white stuff was on my black pants hanging on the patio furniture ... then it was all around me for a few moments .... and I recognized it, snow, very small flakes and nothing lasted very long once it hit the ground or bushes.

One of my neighbor's kids cried: "Look, snow!"

Haven't seen it in almost 20 years here. It sometimes hits the ground but it doesn't last beyond a couple of minutes.

Just my few flakes worth,
shamba

I agree about the tech-y gadgets. I'd love to find an old-fashioned thermometer/barometer combo like my parents had. The kind that didn't need batteries.

Hope the messy stuff clears up for you quickly. The milder temps have cleared the snow off the pavement, here.

What a bummer! My little digital weather station is still humming after a couple years. Lets see how much longer it lasts...Sounds cold there!

Sunshine - I'm a wuss and like to be not too hot and not too cold.

Shamba - wild weather day, eh? We had several hours of snow today but it never got cold enough for it to stick. Our forecast low is 26 degrees. It's currently 21 degrees and only 10 pm...

4 Bushel Farmgal - no messy snow here except up on the mountains. Just muddy but at least it will all be frozen in the AM. Ha!

Katie - hubby got it to work finally. It IS cold!

Ha! I'm with you - "I'm a wuss and like to be not too hot and not too cold." Exactly.
Happy New Year Chile! I just got some sneakers so I can start doing some serious walking!

Oh Chili (& Elli!) - I didn't mean I'm especially tough at all; I can just tolerate a fairly wide range of natural temperatures. I'm not sure why, but I'm very grateful for it.

(And when I do get cold, it doesn't take a lot to warm me.)

On the other hand, I'm almost incapacitated in air-conditioned buildings or over-heated homes (like my mother's place: "But Dear, it's turned *down* to 70 degrees!")

Air-conditioning seems to go right through me (especially my joints) and I can't get warm no matter what, and over-heated homes ... I can't get cool. I can't seem to perspire, my body temp rises, and my face turns red. I just keep having to wash my face & forearms with cool water, and take clothes off - which, if you are a guest in someone else's home, soon becomes problematic. :0

At least in my mother's house, I've learned to change as soon as I get there into the lightest summer pajamas I can find, and try to stay out of the warmer areas of the house as much as I can.

It is an encouraging trait to have in days of rising power (heating/cooling) costs.

Elli - way to go! Hope you enjoy your walks.

Sunshine - so, stripping at friends' houses, eh? Hm, not quite what I pictured from you. ;-)

My MIL has trouble regulating her body temperature. It sounds like you have even more. Have you had that checked out?
